Gritty South Africa beat India 4-3: Match Report

India lost to South Africa 4-3 in the second test match

After impressive performance against Spain, the fortune of Indian team took a massive turnaround against South Africa when they lost to 4-3 in the second test match played in Spain.

It was South Africa who came on the field with great determination and confidence. They enjoyed early possession of the game, and scored a goal in the 9th minute of the game through Clinton Panther with only Bharat Chetri in the way to stop him. Indian defense failed to check the threat of Lloyd Norris-Jones who dodged pass the defender and played it to Panther who put the ball home to give South Africa well deserved lead.

South African team doubled in the lead few minutes later when striker Thronton Mcdade scored a field goal to cause problem to the Indian team. South African team majority of the possession in the first half of the game giving India very few chances to attack.

Striker Danish Mujtaba cut the South Africa’s lead to one goal, when he scored of a rebound of penalty corner. First half of the game saw no more goals and South Africa went into half time win 2-1 lead.

In the second half of the game, Indian team looked more threatening and lively and this confidence paid dividend with Sandeep Singh leveling with thunderous penalty corner strike in the 40th minute of the game.

The goal by Sandeep Singh woke up South Africa and they started pressing hard once again to take a lead. In the 46th minute of the game, South Africa won a penalty corner but it was overturned by the umpires after India protested against the decision.

Lloyd Norris-Jones who was having a great game, scored a beautiful solo goal, after beating three Indian defenders put the ball past keeper Bharat Chetri in the goal. Bharat Chetri received little support from the defenders but on the other hand, South Africa keeper was having a great time between the sticks thwarting Indian attack with ease.

South Africa’s penalty corner expert Justin Reid-Ross scored South Africa’s fourth goal to once agains give two goal cushion to South Africa.

SK Uthappa pulled another goal back for India with just 4 mins to go and give hope for a draw but it was not enough as India could not manage another goal. India did receive penalty corner in the last minute of the play, but it was put off wide.

After a scrappy win against South Africa, India finally succumbed to defeat against lower ranked South Africa.

India will next participate three nations tournament featuring Spain and Great Britain.
