With hockey elections just about to take place after months of delay, hockey fans are expecting change in the fortunes of Indian hockey. In order to turn the tide, we need some major steps. Every hockey fan would or will come out with his/her wish list and hope that next hockey president acts as a Santa Claus and completes the wish. I have also made a list of wish for the next president.
1. Show matches live on TV
Every hockey fan, wants to see the match live instead of looking in the newspaper and internet for some news. In the year 2010 we could only see World Cup. In past two years, not many telecasts were there of international tournaments. So, I want you to sign a deal with and broadcast the matches life for the fans
2. Give annual contract to the players
Taking leaf out of cricket, give yearly contracts to the players, make a pool of 30 players, and give them contracts. Increase their salary, and also give them some cut from the profits earned during the year. Monetary benefit is a great form of motivation and it will help the players.
3. Formation of hockey league
I still remember those days of PHL, where players and abroad joined hands to showcase hockey. I want that back, but this time with more teams, and more changes in rules. Hockey should be fun and entertaining, so starting a hockey league is another thing.
4. Get as many sponsors as possible.
If you look at English Premier League, they have sponsors for everything, from jersey to beverages. Hockey should get sponsors for each and every area. Hockey should get traveling, hospitality, TV, radio, seating, etc. All this will save cost for the association, though this facility should be provided to players and the coaching staff only.
5. Find a new brand ambassador
Last time i checked Suniel Shetty was the brand ambassador of the game. Unfortunately he is not seen anywhere near the team since last edition of PHL. So it is time to find some one new, some one that people know. Best choice for me, Dhanraj Pillay.
6. Be transparent
Transparency is the biggest thing that Indian sports are lacking, especially hockey, no one knows what team will be selected, no one knows about how decisions are made. So, best option is to be transparent and tell the people everything that is taking place.
7. Organize tournaments
FIH has promised to give one tournament to India every year, but India should also hold hold atleast 2-3 tournaments every year so that the bench strength can be measured. It will be a good way to give chance to new players and thus bring new talent. It is better to play tournaments than organizing camps
8. Use services of retired players
The history of Indian hockey was very good, and we have had many good players, the president should use the services of the retired players which will help and improve the team.
9. Give more powers to the coach
India’s head coach Jose Brasa, does not have any power. He just sits in the stand and watches the game as any other hockey fan. He does not have any selection power for the starting XI, leave the team selection. If you have hired some one then use the services, or else remove him. Please use his services, he will be good for the team.
10. Develop infrastructure
It should be a long term agenda for the team. There have been many stories on the bad treatment of players in the local tournaments. It should be the duty of the board to take care of players. Take care of players and players will take care of you. So build stadiums, hostels, training centers etc. for the players.
This was my 10 point wish list for the next hockey president. There could other points that I might have missed. But according to me, these are the major 10 points which next president should take care of……….
