| Day 1 action from World Cup |
If Day 1 of Vitality Women’s Hockey World Cup was a movie, you would believe it was directed by Martin Scorsese as Day 1 of World Cup was full of thrillers. Pool B games were the place where most of the drama took place as results of both the matches played were unexpected. India held Olympics winners to a 1-1 draw while Ireland which is currently ranked 16th in the FIH rankings beat USA 3-1, ranked 7th in the world. It was a full house at Lee Valley Hockey Stadium as the capacity crowd 10,000 fans was in attendence to watch the first day action of Women’s Hockey World Cup.
The tournament started with Germany beating South Africa 3-1 before home team England drew 1-1 against India. The final game of the day was played between Australia and Japan where Australia survived a late onslaught from Japan to beat them 3-2.

Day 1 of Vitality Women’s Hockey World Cup saw 15 goals scored in total with Germany’s Viktoria Huse and Ireland’s Deirdre Duke scoring 2 goals each to be on top of goal scoring charts. Out of the 15 goals scored, 8 goals were field goals, 6 came from penalty corners and 1 was scored through a penalty stroke.
Viktoria Huse scored the first goal of the World Cup 2018.
The first day also saw 8 cards being handed out for various punishments. Lisa Altenburg of Germany was the first player to be handed a Green card while Navneet Kaur from India was the first player to receive a Yellow card.

USA and India received two cards each on the first day (both received 1 green and 1 yellow card).
Penalty corner conversion stood at 21 % with teams just scoring 6 of 28 penalty corners that they earned. England wasted most of the goal scoring opportunities with scoring just 1 of 9 penalty corners they received. The match between the USA and Ireland had better conversion ratio as 2 out of 6 penalty corners were converted.
Day 2 of World Cup will see defending champions Netherlands in action against Asian giants Korea while China and Italy will face off in the other Pool A match. Other matches from Day 2 include Argentina vs Spain in Pool C while New Zealand will open their World Cup campaign against Belgium in Pool D match.
