Both Indian teams have reached the championship pool at the Hockey World Cup 2026, but their routes from here are very different.

India’s women arrive unbeaten after draws against China and England and a 6-1 win over South Africa. They now enter a Pool E featuring the Netherlands, Australia and China. The Netherlands are the clear favourites, which makes India’s match against Australia particularly important in the race for a semifinal place.

The men begin in a more balanced group. India start on zero after the 4-2 defeat to England carried forward, while Argentina are also on zero following their loss to the Netherlands. England and the Netherlands have three points each, but India have beaten the Dutch recently in the Pro League, and Argentina still have matches against both India and England that could affect the table.

The top two teams in Pool E qualify for the semifinals. India now have two championship-pool matches in the women’s tournament and two in the men’s, and all four will have a direct say in whether either team reaches the last four.

India Women Face the Netherlands First, but Australia Is the Key Match

India women reached the championship pool unbeaten after drawing 2-2 with China, beating South Africa 6-1 and holding England 0-0. The draw against China is the result that carries forward, leaving India on one point alongside China, while Netherlands start on three after their 4-2 win over Australia.

The immediate challenge could hardly be bigger. Netherlands are ranked No. 1 in the world and are the reigning World Cup, Olympic, European and FIH Pro League champions. They have also won the last three Pro League titles, so India go into that match against the clearest benchmark in the women’s game.

For India, Australia is the key match in this pool. Australia have not looked untouchable at this World Cup, while India have already shown they can compete with higher-ranked opposition. There is also history between the two teams after India beat Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the Tokyo Olympics to reach the semifinals.

China are in almost the same position as India and will also face Australia. If Netherlands justify their status as favourites and win their remaining games, India vs Australia and China vs Australia are likely to have the biggest say in who takes the second semifinal place.

India Men Start on Zero, but Pool E Is Much More Balanced

The men’s situation carries more immediate pressure because India start the championship pool without a point. Their 4-2 defeat to England carries forward, while England begin on three. Netherlands also have three after beating Argentina 3-1, leaving India and Argentina together on zero.

Compared with the women’s pool, the men’s group is much more evenly placed. India’s first match is against Netherlands, but there is recent evidence that this is not an impossible contest: India beat the Dutch 3-2 in the FIH Pro League in Rotterdam in June.

That result does not remove the scale of the challenge, and India will need to be much tighter than they were in the 5-3 win over Pakistan, where the game became increasingly open. Netherlands are too strong to be given that kind of space, but India have at least shown recently that they can beat them.

Argentina could have a major say in how the pool develops. India vs Argentina should be a balanced contest, and England vs Argentina should be viewed in the same way. Argentina start on zero just like India, so points taken from either England or India could quickly change the shape of the semifinal race.

Four Matches Will Decide India’s Semifinal Chances

For the women, the route is difficult but fairly clear. Netherlands are the strongest team in the pool, and India’s match against Australia is likely to be the key one. China are in the same race on one point, so Australia’s results against both India and China could decide who finishes second.

The men’s pool is more open. India and Argentina both start on zero, while England and Netherlands have three points each. India vs Argentina will be important, but England vs Argentina could matter just as much because any points Argentina take there would immediately affect India’s chances.

India have reached the top eight in both competitions. What happens next depends on four matches against Netherlands, Australia and Argentina, with the women facing the tougher pool and the men having slightly more room for the table to change.
